History of Macknade

In 1847, Frederick Neame Snr (Stefano’s great, great, great grandfather) started Macknade Farm in Faversham, which became one of the region’s leading fruit and vegetable growers, nationally renowned for its fruit, hops and livestock. Handed down through the generations, the farm developed a reputation for fantastic produce and in 1947, pears from the Macknade orchards were served at the wedding of Princess Elizabeth to the late Philip Mountbatten.

In 1979 Patricia Neame (Stefano’s mother) and her husband Renato Cuomo opened a P.Y.O on the corner of the family farm. Renato, an Italian native, originally from the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples, brought an Italian influence to Macknade which is still very much a part of the brand today.

Keeping connections to the land but moving away from farming, in 2001, the family decided to focus purely on retail. The last two decades have seen huge growth, expansion and divergence within Macknade. With quality produce continuing to come through the doors and a thriving community beginning to develop, it made perfect sense for Macknade to add a café to its Faversham retail space in 2011.

This was further expanded in 2018 with an outdoor dining area, which later evolved into the Food Village – a marketplace showcasing the very best food & drink from hand-picked vendors. This vibrant space sees live music and families gather in the warmer months for tasty food, outdoor fun and support for local vendors serving up exceptional food.

In 2020 Macknade took its next big step, venturing outside of Faversham to open a brand-new retail and restaurant space at Elwick Place in Ashford. Macknade Ashford opened just ahead of the Covid pandemic and secured its place at the heart of the community very quickly, and is a space which continues to thrive.

Today, in an ever-changing world, Macknade is focussed on its mission of creating ‘favourite places’ for customers, suppliers & staff alike, in true community spirit.

BANK HOLIDAY FUN IN FAVERSHAM

BANK HOLIDAY FUN IN FAVERSHAM

A round-up of places to go and things to do in Faversham over the August bank holiday.

Bank Holidays are a lovely treat for those of us that don’t have to work. After all, who doesn’t love a three-day weekend? With that in mind, here are some brilliant bank holiday events in Faversham to look out for.

Whether you are looking for something to do with the kids, or just with some friends in the evenings, we have some great suggestions.

– Faversham Pools will be open during the weekend and on the bank holiday, and if this weather keeps up, we’d all benefit from a splash in the outdoor pool. But remember, you need to book a slot in advance. You can do this through their website a week before.

– Faversham Markets will continue over the weekend with the Charter Market on the Friday and Saturday, and there is a special Antique’s Market on the Sunday, replacing the date in September due to the popular Hop Festival. www.favershammarket.org

– Looking for something new for the family? Explore Faversham like you haven’t seen before with a mystery treasure trail from treasuretrails.co.uk. These are done at your own pace, with clues sent to your mobile phone if you get lost. Plus there is a chance to win some real treasure! Your correct answers will be entered into a draw to win £100. Find out more on their website. Click here to find the Faversham trail.

– Technically this isn’t part of the bank holiday weekend but we have to mention Papa Bianco’s live music nights every Wednesday and Friday. On Friday they will be joined by The Altones, so head down to Standard Quay, grab a tasty pizza and kick back!

Ideas for Saturday:

– The popular Brogdale Cider Trail is back! On the 27th and 28th you can sample over 60 local ciders, listen to live music from the likes of Hullabaloo, tuck into delicious hot food from the variety of stalls, and take part in fair games and competitions. The whole family can enjoy this day, even your four-legged members! Tickets can be purchased online via Brogdale Collections website. https://brogdalecollections.org/festivals-and-events/

– Button up your Hawaiian shirts and pop down to The Dove at Dargate to enjoy BBQ food and live music from Mark Lees. Mark will be playing acoustic covers throughout the day starting from 1pm, perfect atmosphere for a sunny day!

– The Old Grammar School is opening for the day from 10.30am to 4pm. Have you ever wondered what the Elizabethan building looks like from the inside? Here’s your chance! Pop down to The Masonic Hall, Abbey Place ME13 7BG to see.

How to spend your Sunday:

– As mentioned above, Brogdale Cider Trails will be in full swing on Sunday too. Purchase your tickets online and head down to Brogdale Farm for a full day of sun, entertainment, food, dance, and most importantly cider.

– Gather your friends and family and head to The Dove in Dargate for an evening of favourite covers from local band Ozzie and The Uglies. They cover a wide variety of music from Pop, Funk, Soul, Reggae, to Rock n Roll, so there’s bound to be a song for everyone in your party.

– Do you fancy yourself as a bit of an antiques collector? There will be an Antiques Market on the 28th to replace the date in September that will be taken over by The Hop Festival. So, head down to rummage through tons of vintage and antique treasures. The Market opens from 8am and will start to close down at 3pm.

With the price of petrol and living soaring, many people will be choosing to stay local for their fun trips this summer. So if you live near Faversham, support your local businesses and attractions and have a fabulous time too!

Calling local tourism businesses!

New Treat Time Tuesday initiative for Faversham

A new initiative is being launched to encourage Faversham’s residents to try out local attractions and leisure businesses over the summer holidays.

The purpose is to help local tourism-related/leisure businesses and organisations who may be experiencing a downturn during current challenging times.  The initiative will also provide good value fun and treats for people living in Faversham, encouraging them to enjoy the attractions on their doorstep.  This is particularly pertinent when many people are struggling to pay for fuel for longer trips.

Summary

  • Businesses will provide special offers and treats every Tuesday
  • A flyer with details of the promotion will be distributed to households in Faversham, including new housing estates
  • A dedicated webpage will be created hosting information online
  • Anyone visiting a participating business and presenting the flyer or webpage will be able to access the special offer
  • There will be extensive social media activity, including a launch competition featuring prizes from participating businesses
  • The initiative will run during the school holidays, from the end of July until early September.  There’s a possibility Treat Time Tuesday could continue beyond this if participating businesses would like it to
  • The Town Council will be featuring Treat Time Tuesday in its Summer in Swale exhibition in 12 Market Place

Costs

The cost of taking part is £250.  This includes a contribution to the design, print and delivery of 2,000 flyers; creation of dedicated webpage; inclusion in social media campaign; contribution to project management and communications costs.

We are also offering the option for businesses to be included in the webpage, but not the flyer and its distribution, for a lower price of £100.

Inspiration for Father’s Day in Faversham

Are you looking for the perfect gift this Father’s Day? Faversham shops and businesses have plenty to offer this year, leaving you no excuse to shop elsewhere.

It’s so important to shop local when and where you can, as many of the independent businesses have been hit hard over the last couple of years with many struggling to keep afloat. Buying from a local shop, market, or other business is a great way to support them by showing that you love what they do, and encouraging them to carry on their great work.

Father’s Day suggestions from InFaversham

So, in no particular order, here are some fantastic local businesses to support this year…

Lotty’s Flowers on the Market Place and D&G Florists in Preston Street both sell lovely little indoor plants and arrangements.  These make for perfect presents for little people to buy their dads.

Top Hat & Tales in West Street not only has a superb range of accessories and gifts.  You will also find a terrific selection of both fiction and non-fiction books too at their sister shop Tales on Market Street.

Creekside Vinyl on Market Street is a cracking gem of a record shop with an owner who is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about music.  There’s plenty to choose from with a wide range of musical tastes. Or you can play it safe and buy a gift voucher.

The legendary Faversham gift shop Barley Mow has a wonderfully curated selection of gifts and cards and you’re bound to find something even for the hardest man to buy for!

Brogdale Collections holds terrific workshops and short courses including cider making, hedgerow wine making, gardening and more.  What a fab present idea for those dads that would prefer an experience as a gift.  Brogdale also sells gift vouchers and annual Orchard Passes.

Faversham Market will be open on Friday and Saturday – if your Dad loves gardening, then Richard’s Plants has a great selection of plants at reasonable prices. There’s plenty on offer for dads who enjoy their food and drink.

West 1 on Preston Street has a great range of men’s clothing and the friendly staff can help you pick out the perfect Father’s Day gift. Gridlock on Preston Street also has a great selection of men’s shoes, clothes and accessories.

Edible Culture on Canterbury Road and Grow at Brogdale are both great options if you’re looking for presents for dads that garden!  You could also pop down to Standard Quay too and check out the vintage tools and pots for sale.

If you’re thinking of splashing out and treating Dad to a watch, Barker’s on Preston Street is a lovely jewellery shop with an excellent selection of both watches and jewellery.

Why not treat your Dad to a fine bottle of wine from Vino’s in Court Street? Fabio has a great selection from you to choose from.

Macknade Fine Food on Selling Road has a magnificent range of both international and locally-sourced food and drink. They also sell hampers.  You’re sure to find the perfect present for foodie-dads.

In addition to the above, Faversham also has a selection of excellent card shops.  Check out Creek Creative Gallery; Forget-Me-Not and Presentimes

Support your local businesses

Of course we can’t possibly list everything going on in Faversham, so please keep the recommendations going by commenting on our social media posts.

Mad-March-Market

Celebrating Faversham with our Mad March Markets

Celebrating Faversham with our Mad March Markets

By Jess Roberts

Faversham Markets hosted a weekend of Mad March Markets and great fun was had by all.

Fun-packed weekend

The Mad March Markets brought thousands of visitors into Faversham on the 26th and 27th of March. What a weekend it was.

The event was organised by Faversham Town Council, Faversham Markets, Red Dog PR and many great volunteers. It was held to celebrate the arrival of spring and life getting back to normal, following two years of restrictions.

Many old and new faces took to the cobbled streets to set up their wonderful stalls full of local produce, handmade items, artwork, interactive crafts and more. Visiting Faversham Markets is always a great opportunity to meet the maker, and likewise for the businesses to meet their customers. We saw a lot of happy shoppers and stallholders spending time getting to know each other at the market weekend, which isn’t something you’ll see in national retail chains! You’ll always find a warm welcome and smiling faces here, the Faversham community is one of the best.

Businesses joined in the fun!

Many of Faversham’s local businesses and shops also got involved in the Mad March Weekend and worked very hard on their window displays. A challenge was set to Faversham’s shops prior to the event to decorate their windows, celebrating all things spring, and we weren’t disappointed. The public voted for their favourites, and the results came in at the end of the second day.

First place went to The Yarn Dispensary, who decorated their windows beautifully in knitted bunting, stockings, jumpers, and more. Their trophy was presented to The Yarn Dispensary team by Faversham’s Mayor, Alison Reynolds. A special shout out has to go out to the two runners up, Ollie Bongos Pet Essentials and Lotty’s Flowers, whose windows were superb. A lot of time and effort went into everybody’s windows and the results were very close – Faversham town centre looked very special. Thank you to all those that took part, and to the sponsors Alloy Marketing.

Fun and games

Activities throughout the weekend included the Spot The Hare trail, which was another great success. Hundreds of programmes were picked up and taken around Faversham’s shops to find the hidden hares. The aim was to jot down the letter that the hare was hiding to spell out a secret word. Everybody that completed the task was entered into a hat to pick two winners to win family tickets to the Royal Cinema and some lovely spring pots from Richard’s Plants.

During the course of the weekend, there was live music, entertainment, and even an appearance from a very cute, miniature pony!

Labyrinth and The Hospice Band provided visitors with some great music which attracted a great crowd, provided a fantastic atmosphere and was key to the success of the event. The two bands also managed to raise an admirable amount of £600 to help support the Hospice and the crisis in Ukraine.

Merryman the Jester was also present, providing fun and entertainment for the children. He never fails to impress with his juggling, magic tricks and silly pranks.  Roleplay Rascals created a fantastic dressing up opportunity, where children could pose in child-sized toy packaging! Craft activities were provided by local charity Holding On Letting Go on Saturday and on Sunday, Nan in a Van entertained the children with pottery painting.

In addition to all of this, we also had a special guest named Rupert. Rupert was a Shetland pony who visited the markets on the Saturday. He enjoyed his time taking photos with the Easter bunny, getting petted by the visitors and munching on hay throughout the day. If you missed him, he will be back at Christmas!  Rupert’s appearance was sponsored by Harrisons Homes and also managed to raise an admirable £200 for Holding On Letting Go.

A great success

Overall, the event was a huge success and brought everyone together after a tough time during the course of the pandemic. We look forward to many more events in Faversham in the weeks to come.

Claire Windridge, from Faversham Town Council, says: “The purpose of the weekend’s activities was to welcome visitors and shoppers back to Faversham and showcase the town’s wonderful shops and  businesses. A massive thank you to the visitors and businesses who supported the event, it was wonderful to see so many people in town having fun.”

Thank you

Congratulations to Faversham Market,  Faversham Town Council, Red Dog PR and all the charities, stallholders, businesses and entertainers who worked hard to ensure the weekend was a success.  A wonderful example of everyone working together for the good of Faversham.

Lottys-Flowers-Mothers-Day-ideas

Mothers Day Gift Ideas

Many of us couldn’t celebrate Mother’s Day how we wanted to last year, so we’d love to make it a day to remember this time around. Coming up on the 27th of March, you don’t have long to get your day planned.

Here are some suggestions for hints to give your children, or some ideas on how to treat your own Mum.

Flowers

Starting off simple, you can’t go wrong with a bunch of flowers, any mother would be delighted to receive some. You can head to Lotty’s Flowers in the Market Place or D&G Florist in East Street – both shops have flowers for all price ranges, from charming springtime daffodils to big bouquets.

Afternoon Tea

We can’t think of a better occasion than Mother’s Day to head into town for a spot of afternoon tea. We have plenty of tea rooms to pick from in Faversham such as: Cosgroves, Havishams, The Yard, The Secret Garden Café at Standard Quay, Creek Creative café, Upstairs Downstairs by Morrisons, the Café by the Creek at Oare and more.

Head to the Markets

The upcoming Mad March Market falls on Mother’s Day and will be a lovely place to celebrate along with friends and family. There will be live music from Labyrinth and The Hospice Band, entertainment from local stalls and Merryman The Jester, and several activities such as a ‘Spot The Hare Trail’ and a window display competition. We’ve heard there will also be a pony named Rupert at the market ready for meet and greets.

Alongside all of these lovely extras, there will also be plenty of opportunities to support local businesses by shopping at their weekend stalls. If you can’t make it on Sunday, it will also be on the Saturday from 9am until 3.30pm.

Don’t forget a card

Don’t forget a card! Presentimes, Barley Mow, No77, Forget Me Not, and more local shops are all full of a terrific selection of Mother’s Day cards. If you need wrapping paper these shops will also have you covered. You needn’t leave Faversham!

Picking the perfect gift

Shopping small is much more meaningful than shopping at big online retailers. You can often find one-of-a-kind gifts in Faversham that are much more special. Thankfully, Faversham is full of wonderful independent businesses. Take a look in Top Hat & Tales for accessories and artwork, No77 for interior pieces, soaps and jewellery, and Creek Creative for pieces from local artists and makers. The Best of Faversham Market is also on 19th and 26th of March, which is a great opportunity to meet the makers and see what they have to offer.

Treat Mum to a meal

We are lucky that Faversham is full of friendly pubs, cafes, and restaurants waiting to serve you and your family.

Does your mum love a glass of wine? Head to Vinos on Court Street or newly opened Baltic House Wine bar at Standard Quay – the perfect place to wind down and enjoy some delicious drinks. Next door is Papa Bianco which creates the best handmade pizzas, with monthly specials, desserts and more. If your mum would rather some nachos, head back to the Market Place to visit California Cravings for your fix of Mexican cuisine.

Of course, we have many great restaurants In Faversham many serving delicious Sunday lunches. Check out The Pheonix, The Quay, The Sun Inn, Ask Italian, and The Yard to name just a handful, who are all taking bookings for Mother’s Day.

We hope that this blog has given you some ideas on how to treat your mum this Mother’s Day, and that you have the best day surrounded by Family and Friend’s.
